March Runners Log

Wow, I am on such a rush right now with all the runs we have been doing. We have not really had a breather. Again this month we did 2 fitness challenges instead of just 1. I am so proud of us. I say us because it is a group of us who support each other and do the races. Let me start by telling you, a support group is the #1 reason why I continue to do my runs. When I am ready to give up, they are not. We help balance each other out. If you are doing it alone, get a group of friends to join you.

1st Fitness Challenge-Race Against Violence 5K run

Alba 00:31:52 with an average of 10:17/m pace
2nd Fitness Challenge-Bayou City Classic 10K run

Alba 1:14:33 with an average of 12:01/m pace

So below you will find the pictures of my last race. Pay attention to my face. You can clearly see how concentrated I am on what I am doing. I am trying to breath. There were uproads and downroads, so I had my own strategy for each. The reason I am showing you these pictures are to show you, that I actually do the runs. I do have a hard time with myself. It is all mind games. But anything can be played like this, dieting, exercising, etc... The main idea is the last picture where I crossed the line, you too can cross your line. Whatever it may be. Find something fun for you. Find a group of people with the same goals in mind. You cannot cross the finish line if you do not start by crossing the starting line. If you have been standing on the sidelines, it is your time now. Let others cheer for you.

I just received my wedding video. As we watched it, I noticed how skinny I had gotten for my wedding. But the number on the scale was not my magical number. That's it, the number is just that, a number. Watching that video made me realize this. I wanted to pass it along to you. Stop watching that number as the magical number, instead watch what you eat, watch what you do, and watch your clothes get looser and looser.

Until next challenge... see you at the start line.

March 29th is a National Mom & Pop Business-Owners Day

Today March 29 is National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day. It is a day to recognize small business owners, particularly husband and wife business owners. These are the restaurants, pharmacies, business, etc.. that are family owned no franchise or chains.

I was listening to the radio and they were talking about this topic. I love the idea of visiting these type of places. We need to help the economy by supporting these type of businesses. Here are some of the places the callers called in about, which I have never heard or been to any of them, I will add them to my list of places to visit:

1)The first place is in danger of closing its doors-
Brothers-In-Law's Bar-B-Que
503 Freeport St Houston 77015 713.453.2676

2)LITTLE BITTY BURGER BARN
5503 PINEMONT DRIVE
HOUSTON, TX 77092
ph: 713-683-6700
fax: 713-683-6709
littlebitty@littlebittyburgerbarn.com

3)Doyle's Restaurant
2136 W 34th St Houston 77018 713.686.8271

4)El Jarrito
21724 Highland Knolls Dr Katy 77450 281.579.8844

5)Pappy's Cafe
9041 Katy Fwy Houston 77024 713.827.1811

6)This one is one I have visited and highly recommend. I love it.
Empire Cafe
1732 Westheimer Rd
Houston, TX 77098
(713) 528-5282

So, today let us all head out and find a mom and pop business to support. Go to your favorite spot. I remember a burger place called Luke's, not sure if it was a mom and pop, but it is now closed. Their burgers were the best. I loved going to eat there. Now the building is the only reminder we have of a place we use to go to, and the best burgers I have ever tasted.

I am attending Hispanicize 2011

It is the 2nd Annual Hispanic PR and Social Media Conference. Next week on April 6-8, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. This conference will have 32 sessions, and more than 80 speakers, keynoters like Edward James Olmos and panels in Hispanic public relations, social media and bloggers.

I cannot wait to meet and greet some of the elite Latina and Latino bloggers from all over the United States. I am also excited to learn from everyone, the sessions, trainings, and boot camp. Again this will be my first conference.

So stay tuned to my blog next week, as I blog live from Hollywood, California. Follow me @independentmami and #HISPZ11, for conference updates.

Any advice? Have you been to a conference? What was the good, and what was the bad? What do you want to hear about? Since this is my first conference I will be taking plenty of notes on everything. I will try and bring everything back to this blog and let you in. I love blogging. I have met a great group of bloggers who have helped me. But then there are those that only help themselves. Just recently I asked for help from some bloggers with my media kit (becuase I do not have one), sponsorship (because I am not rich but really wanted to attend this conference and learn), and just some place to start, again this being my first ever conference. Leave a comment with questions, advice, or just comments.

Thanks!

Tangled Winner

Congratulations......

Tasty Thursday-Mission Burrito

Today's Tasty Thursday takes us to Mission Burrito. Mission Burrito has a several locations, like West Alabama and I-10 and Durham. We arrived early but by the time we were leaving the lunch crowd had attacked this place. It was full of people coming in to eat.

What I like about the burrito is that you can have whatever you like, you choose. The ingredients are right in front of you and you make the choice. You can also pick from the menu but why not build your own. And if you are watching what you eat, you do not even have to have a tortilla. You can have it in a bowl.

I built my own chicken bowl. I started out with the Cilantro Rice. I added black beans. I threw some corn, lettuce, pico de gallo, jalapenos, cucumber ranch sauce, and top it with some guacamole.

My hubby liked the entire concept of building your own. He does not like certain ingredients and is always asking what is in items before making a selection. This burrito filled him up.

The meal was great. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather in their patio area. We both got full. We ordered some chips, salsa and 2 drinks. Our total $19.70. Great meal under $20.00. Check out this special they currently have...

***Disclosure-I am not receiving compensation for any of my Tasty Thursday posts. These are local dine in places we are choosing to eat at. I am trying to bring you a selection of restaurants available in Houston for under $20.00 per couple.

Everyday Breakfast Tips and Trivia

So as soon as I heard I would be hosting a party, I started planning my party. The first person I told was my son. He loves Nutella. I remember the first time he tried Nutella. He went to a French camp last summer for a week. He learned alot of things and tried new foods. Nutella was one of the new things he learned about. He camp home begging me to buy some. I had never seen this boy be so excited about some food. I have been a fan as well, ever since. So he was as excited as I was to know that we would be hosting a party and the goodies we would be receiving.
With everything prepared for our party, guest were invited to join us for some breakfast. Breakfast was a fun get-2-gether talking about recipes and enjoying some Nutella. Guest learn that Nutella is a hazelnut spread. Nutella has no artificial colors or preservatives. I love the the kiddos love it. I love it myself.
