Houston Auto Show Review

Cars, Cars, and more cars.... The Houston Auto Show was here for one weekend only. This past weekend Houston families were able to walk around and see all the new cars. Not only checking out all the new technology and innovative cars but also the classics. I love classics. I would have enjoyed riding in these beautiful creations.

Check this beauty out...

A favorite at the show is always the FORD robot.

This was the cutest car I had ever seen. Right now, it is on my list for my son's future car. It sits 4 people. It is cute, and budget friendly.

But let me show you my future car....Chevrolet Corvette!!

Even though I know it is not in my budget, this corvette is just so beautiful! I'm in love!

There are so many things to do at the Houston Auto Show. I could not show you all of our pictures but wanted to share some of my favorites. It really was a crowd pleasers when all kids under 12 are free. There were so many kiddos having fun with their parents. It was like always a great experience. Props to Chevrolet. My GMC Terrain was on display, well not mine. Mine was in the parking lot. But alot of people seem to really have an interest. I love my GMC Terrain. I have no complaints. We still get stopped in the street with people wondering how we like it. I LOVE IT!!

***Disclosure-My family received a 4pk of passes, parking pass, and notebooks/pencil pads for the kiddos. No compensation was received. These are Independentmami's personal opinions.

KLEENEX BRAND FACIAL TISSUE CALLS ON HISPANIC KIDS TO HELP FIGHT COLDS THROUGH EDUCATION THIS COLD AND FLU SEASON

Campaign Seeks to Enlist Them as “Certified Sneeze Catchers”; Give Their Families a Chance to Win a Trip to an Orlando, Fla. Theme Park

NEENAH, WIS., Jan. 10, 2011 – Kleenex brand facial tissue is offering Hispanic children a chance to win an all-expense-paid trip with their families to an Orlando, Fla. theme park if they sign up to help fight colds through education, this cold and flu season. The brand has launched a massive TV, radio, grassroots and digital campaign aimed at enlisting thousands of elementary-school-age kids to participate in an educational initiative called “Sneeze Catchers.” The goal is to help kids understand in a fun, child-friendly way the importance of using facial tissue when feeling a sneeze coming on. Five winners will be chosen randomly in March.
“Parents feel pride when they see their kids speaking and behaving responsibly about health-related issues,” said Ken Champa, associate brand manager for Kleenex brand. “That’s why we believe that as the kids share their learning about how facial tissue with Sneeze Shield Technology helps keep stuff off hands, the campaign will resonate with them, as well.”

A single sneeze can spray up to 3,000 droplets into the air at more than 100 miles per hour – something napkins, handkerchiefs and bathroom tissue simply are not created to handle as well as facial tissue. Sneeze Shield is a special protective layer in each tissue that helps keep stuff from soaking through. Of all facial tissues on the market, only Kleenex brand offers Sneeze Shield in all of its tissues.

Besides the chance to win the Orlando trip, kids who sign up as Certified Sneeze Catchers will receive a free official kit, while supplies last, with information and tools to better protect themselves against colds and keeping stuff off hands. The kit includes a Kleenex brand bag, T-shirt, cap, ID card, a Kleenex brand storage case, and an activity book. To become certified as Kleenex brand Sneeze Catchers, children must first obtain their parents’ permission before going online to visit www.atrapaestornudos.com . Although the campaign specifically targets Hispanic kids, it is open to children of all ethnic backgrounds.

About Kleenex Brand Tissue
The world's first and America's best-selling facial tissue, the Kleenex brand is recognized by families in more than 150 countries. Invented in 1924, Kleenex tissues were initially marketed as a sanitary way to remove cold cream and makeup. Once advertising was shifted to emphasize the product's use as a disposable handkerchief, however, sales soared. Always the innovative leader, Kleenex brand facial tissue has met the needs of consumers for more than 80 years with products that provide the comforting, reassuring touch to make things better.

Working Class tv sitcom review

CMT has a brand new show called "Working Class" featuring Melissa Peterman (Reba) and Golden Globe winner Ed Asner that premiers on Friday, January 28 at 8 pm PT/ET.

Premiere Episode: “The Buddy System”
Carli’s old flame from high school shows up hoping to re-ignite his “spark” with Carli — even if it means humiliating her in front of her new boss.

Independentmami's thoughts-
I really enjoyed watching the preview of the show. It was funny. If you watched Reba, and you loved it, you will love this show. It has that kinda humor. This is not your Barbara Jean character. I cannot wait to see more of this show. I really liked her character and cannot wait to see what else happens.

New Year's Challenge

Ok, so as you know my New Year's Resolution is to do a fitness challenge every month in 2011. It is not about losing weight this year but about staying active.

So here are the 5 W's:

Who: Independentmami

What: 5K, 10K, half marathons, marathon??

When: 2011-every month

Where: In Houston and surrounding areas

Why: This is one deserves a whole entire explaination. See below:

First let me start by saying that I have found a new love for running. Ok, so years ago, my bestfriend invited me to join her in a 5K WALK for a great cause. I did, and we crossed the finish line. That was fun. We always saw the runners and never thought we would be one of them one day. You look at them and see how in the zone they are about running. The gear they have on to help them run is impressive too. But never in a million years would I have thought that would have been me. Throughout the years we have continued to do several 5K walks every year. Well my bestfriend invited me to do a 10K RUN this past Thanskgiving. How crazy was she to think we could do it? How crazy was I when I said ok? Well we did it. We crossed the finish line and that is how I became runner. The sense of great accomplishment. I pushed my body to those limits and I went there. It was great. A little after that we did the jingle bell run and I bombed. It was a 5 mile race and my body was dying. My knee started killing me. I couldnt breath. I have attached pictures from this dreadful day so have proof for one day when I look back.

Here are my times:

Alba Turkey Trot 6.2 miles 1:19:24

Jingle Bell Run 5 miles 1:06:32

Remember with the 5Q's always comes the big H.

HOW??

So I decided that it would not happen again. Yes, I am running again. As of January 1, 2011 I have started TRAINING. Yes, I train. It is a word I use for exercising. I started out slowly walking. I downloaded a free ap. (Endomondo) It keeps track of the miles I do. So it turns out that my entire neighborhood is a little over 3 miles. I manage to do the entire neighborhood in 1 hr walking for the 1st week. The secong week I start running. I ran my entire neighborhood in 37 minutes the first day. I average 38 minutes the entire week. I am hoping to improve my time every week as I continue to train. My knee still kills me sometimes but I keep going. At times I get home I dont really feel like doing it but then I get out there and I do it. And here is the best thing of all, I have not entered a gym at all and I have lost 10 lbs. I am eating healthy balanced meals including snacks everyday. I am at the half way point this month and am very happy about how I feel and the results. On Jan 30th, I will be running the El Paso 5K. I hope to do the run in under or right at 30 minutes. I hope to continue improving my time as the weeks pass. I will check in after the race and give you my results, thoughts, and reactions.

Help?

I dont know about you but I use my help button. I am not doing this alone. I recommend you get a partner if you need help. My husband is helping me achieve my goals. He has helped me with the food, gear, and advice. Not only has he done that, but he is beside me everyday on my runs. He runs faster, way faster than I do. But I hope to be at his pace soon! My bestfriends are running as well. This is something that has changed all of us.

To be continued...stay tuned for my shoe review. Find out what shoes have helped me.

IRS and Telemundo Host Tax Information Program in Spanish

IRS and Telemundo Host Tax Information Program in Spanish

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service is joining national TV network Telemundo in a special one-hour tax program for Spanish-speaking taxpayers on Sunday, Jan. 30.

The program “Los Impuestos y Usted” (“Taxes and You”) will air at:

• noon Eastern time
• 1:00 p.m. Central time
• 1:30 p.m. Mountain time
• 1:00 p.m. Pacific time

Check your local listings for exact times.

“Los Impuestos y Usted” will help viewers determine whether they qualify for many tax benefits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit or EITC. Workers who earned $48,362 or less from wages, self-employment or farming last year could receive larger refunds if they qualify to receive EITC.

IRS estimates four of five eligible taxpayers claimed their EITC last year, obtaining an average $2,200 from the credit. To qualify, taxpayers must meet certain criteria and file a tax return, even if they do not have a filing requirement.
Among other topics, the program features Free File, a program that allows individuals to file their taxes online at no cost, how to get free tax help at local community centers and other services available at www.irs.gov/espanol.

MĂłnica Noguera, host for many of Telemundo’s specials, will present the IRS program, which features in-studio interviews with IRS tax experts. IRS tax experts will also be available during the airing of the program to answer questions submitted online via Telemundo’s website.

Information about the EITC, Free File and other IRS programs and services is available in Spanish at www.irs.gov/espanol or toll-free at 800-829-1040, extension 8.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Deadline Extended to Jan 31, 2011

SCOTT BRAND WITH FIRST “DONE RIGHT AWARDS”

EIGHT UNSUNG HEROES FROM THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY

TO BE HONORED BY SCOTT BRAND WITH FIRST “DONE RIGHT AWARDS”

Candidates Were Nominated By the Community, Elected By Panel of Independent Judges

A Miami attorney, who devotes her evenings to helping homeless youth in her community. A Houston handyman, who helps out elderly, disabled and low-income neighbors repair things around their homes, at no charge. A Los Angeles woman, who volunteers her time to work with incarcerated youth, to the point of having adopted one of their children.

These are but three examples of the kinds of unsung heroes an independent panel of judges from Hispanic media recently chose to receive the Scott brand’s first “Done Right Awards.” The award was created this year by the Scott brand to recognize ordinary people, who have done extraordinary things to help the Hispanic community. The eight winners hail from Miami, Chicago, Houston, San Antonio, Los Angeles and Union City, NJ. Each will receive $2,000, plus a $5,000 donation to their favorite charity or non-profit of their choice.

“These awards celebrate our brand’s Done Right philosophy, which is to blend great performance and value in all our products,” said Chris Allen, Scott brand manager. “The eight remarkable individuals we are recognizing this year embody our core values of doing things right, in this case by going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in the Hispanic community. We are very proud to honor them, and in so doing to thank all our Hispanic consumers for their loyalty to the Scott brand.”

This year’s winners are: Miami attorney Liz Fate; Chicago social worker Edwin González; retired San Antonio public school counselor Gene Cortez; Houston handyman Filiberto Cárdenas; Union City, New Jersey restaurateur JosĂ© GarcĂa; Los Angeles social worker Fernando Sarabia; retiree Herlinda Morales and housewife Hilda Morella Esparragoza. Their inspiring, personal stories were among the thousands of nominations received between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15, 2010 from members of the Hispanic community throughout the country, who answered the Scott brand’s call for nominees.

Twenty finalists were chosen by the brand in the first round of judging. The finalists were then evaluated by an independent panel of judges hailing from respected news organizations throughout the country. The judges included, Pedro Rojas, Editor in Chief, La Opinion Newspaper, Los Angeles; Manuel Martinez Llorián, Vice President & General Mgr., WSCV-51, Miami; Tino Duran, Publisher, La Prensa Newspaper, San Antonio; Areli Padilla, Entertainment Editor, La Raza Newspaper, Chicago; and Adriana Calhoon, on-air personality at KOVE-FM Recuerdo, Houston.

Below are the winners’ stories:

·When she isn’t busy with her law practice, Miami attorney Liz Fate volunteers her time to run the Drop-In Center for Homeless Youth (Project NEST), in that city. There, she helps provide the kids with food and hygiene packs, donated clothing and educational resources. She also cooks meals and sometimes serves as a mother and guidance counselor to them.

·Edwin González is responsible for the success of hundreds of poor kids from the inner-city ‘Pilsen’ Neighborhood of Chicago, where he grew up. He can be found wherever there is need – whether holding up a grieving mother at the casket of her 15-year-old son, a victim of gang violence, or attending the college graduation of one of “his kids.”

·Houston resident Filiberto Cardenas, a natural handyman, volunteers a lot of his time to helping the elderly, disabled and poor in his neighborhood with odd jobs around their houses, whether repairing a window or a leaky faucet. He does this out of the goodness of his heart, without expecting anything in return. He says he is just happy to help.

·Los Angeles social worker Fernando Sarabia devotes himself full-time to helping kids in his inner-city neighborhood stay out of gangs, and go on to reach their full potential in life. Despite being confined to a wheelchair as the result of a congenital condition, Fernando not only mentors, tutors and provides them with personal counseling and encouragement, but he also leads them in recreational and sports activities.

·Retired San Antonio public school counselor Gene Cortez’s passion is to help those who cannot help themselves. After a 22-year Army career, he returned to the predominantly Hispanic Near East Side of San Antonio to serve as a Boy Scout Leader and social worker. In addition to volunteering with the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team – he has logged in more than 300 hours in 2010 alone – he and his wife Anita also provide mental health and medical assessments to victims of disasters.

·Hilda Morella Esparragoza is a constant source of guidance and support to at-risk Hispanic youth 18 years of age and younger, both within and outside prisons. For more than a quarter of a century, she has been encouraging and advising them on ways to change their lives and care for their children. Hilda’s credibility comes from practicing what she preaches - 27 years ago she adopted the three-year-old daughter of a female inmate. She raised the little girl as her own and provided for her throughout her life with all the necessary financial and spiritual resources to help her graduate college and go on to live a successful and meaningful life.

·Through his business, Union City, New Jersey restaurateur JosĂ© GarcĂa devotes himself to helping others less fortunate than he, who are undergoing either health or financial problems. Every Monday, he donates the day’s profit of his Restaurant Cejas, to a different person or family in need of help.

·Just when she should have been preparing to enjoy a bountiful retirement, Herlinda Morales fell on hard times financially and health-wise. This development forced her to move in into a very modest dwelling in Los Angeles’ Skid Row community. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, however, she joined the Los Angeles Mission, where she volunteers many hours a week serving as a Spanish interpreter for the staff, and helping with numerous other responsibilities.

COVERGIRL’s 50th Anniversary party with Latina spokesperson Dania Ramirez

Dania Ramirez- by Celebrity Makeup Artist Matthew VanLeeuwen

Dania’s makeup inspiration was a twist on a classic beauty look. She called me earlier that day to tell me she was in love with her dress and thought she wanted a red lip, which I totally agreed with once I saw her outfit. We stuck with a fairly clean, pale lid and sculpted brows, but I also wanted to add a little gold to the eyes in honor of COVERGIRL’s 50th Anniversary.

To start, I prepped the skin with a light moisturizer and then applied COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Serum Primer. I then used COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Foundation in Nutmeg which gave her perfectly polished skin with a luxurious finish.
On her eyes, I applied COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Citrus Flair, using the green color on the lid and the bronze color in the crease and then darkened the outside of the eye with COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire. I created a minimal line to define the eye with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Black Fire and finished with a few coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Length Mascara in Black.

On her lips, I created a strong, glamorous red lip with COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lipstick in Hot.

Lastly, I applied COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Blush in Plush Peach on the apples of her cheeks to balance out the look. It is really important to create a natural looking balance on the skin especially when working with a bright red lip. I finished it off by setting her face with a light dusting of COVERGIRL Clean Pressed Powder in Tawny.

Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year.

I know I have been a little distant but life has been complicated. Well the wedding went fine and perfect with a some imperfections that are expected at weddings. The honeymoon cruise was good. I was little sea sick but I made it back in one piece. The holidays were pretty busy with all the family and friend get2gethers. And if I wasn't busy enough 2 days before Christmas, I hurt my back at work. I could not even breath. So I was handicap for the last 2 weeks of the year. My mom also had some heart complications and went to the hospital. She is all better now. But anyways, I just wanted to catch you up with what has been going on.

I again have gained weight, and need to lose it. My husband is helping me achieve my goal. I weighed myself at the beginning of the year, and today I weighed in 7 lbs lost already. My New Years Resolution is to do a fitness challenge every month this year. On January 30, I will be running a 5K. And on Feb 19, I have another 5K scheduled. I had lots of fun at the end of the year when I completed my 1st 10K on Thanksgiving Day. Soon after that I did a 5 mile run, I just can't get enough. The runs were so much fun. It takes a lot of discipline to commit yourself. I had never done a run, always walks. I love to support my causes and that is how I got started. My walks are alot of fun, and now the runs. This year it is not about losing weight short term it is about a lifetime commitment for good health. I got so tired of dieting and exercising last year for my wedding that I burned out. Don't get me wrong I loved how I looked for my wedding but I soon lost it all as soon as I stopped doing all the things that helped me get to my goal. So this year is about having fun training for my runs. I hope to cut my time every time. Right now I stand at more than an hour. So first goal is to cut my time to under an hour. I am not trying to win a medal or first place just trying to achieve my goals. Maybe one day I will win a medal or 1st place.
