My Birthday Toga Party

Another year has come and I am turning a year older is all I kept thinking in my head.  Why do we dread turning another year?  I have a lot to be thankful for and celebrating life and all the blessings we have received should be enough for a celebration.  I decided I wanted to celebrate turning another year, my BIG 3-5.  Yeah, most people don't celebrate 35.  But again, I have a lot to celebrate and I love to throw parties.

Picking a theme was not hard at all since I have been wanting to throw a Toga Party since I can remember.  I talked to my hubby and he was on board and said give some instructions and we will go from there.  I told him to leave it all to me, even though it was my birthday I love to party plan.

First you need food.  I decided to go with grapes, breads, cheese, olives, greek/italian/ceasar salads, etc...
For the decorations.  I used some columns, gold, green, and greenery like ivys in gold pots.  I also used the food and drinks for decor.  I bought wine, all kinds of wine, which by the way no one drank.  They said it looked like decorations so no one touched it.  And my sister in law made me this beautiful cake.
But the most important thing I was most worried about was my outfit-my toga.  I didn't know exactly what I wanted to wear but I did want to look like a goddess.  This is the costume I ended up going with:

I loved it.  It was so comfortable. It even came with the head band that match the toga design as well.

Here are some pics from the party:

We had a blast!  Turning 35 is not that bad.  And throwing a toga party was not hard at all, it was easy.  Everyone had fun, enjoyed all the food, and wore togas!

Have you ever thrown a toga party?

Fitness Friday-Clean Eating

***Disclosure-Sample product was received to review.  All opinions stated are my own based on my personal experience.

I was at a plateau that I could not break, stuck on the scale no matter what I tried.  I know it is suppose to not matter but it mattered to me.  I wasn't really seeing any difference on my clothes or inches falling of either.  I guess that is what happens when you don't let your body rest.  Someone suggested I start clean eating or Paleo.  I am not good at cooking or recipes.  But I do like to learn and once I get it, it becomes my new dish.  My sister in law, Christy (My Timeless Blessings) has been clean eating and has dropped a significant amount of weight.  So I said why not give it a try?  We went shopping for groceries from the list she made.  You need to be prepared.  Clean eating requires clean products.  Once we were done, we got in the kitchen and started making some clean recipes.  One of the recipes we had for a breakfast dish is for waffles.

Clean waffle recipe-
1 cup of sprouted spelt flour, 1 cup of almond meal flour, 1/4 cup of flax seed, 1 tb baking powder, 1 tb agave nectar
One Degree Organic Foods-Organic Spelt Flour

Make bread, cookies, and some new friends with pure flour made from this ancient, heart healthy grain. Our organic spelt is a great plant-based protein source, and is grown without any animal fertilizers.

We paired 2 pieces of waffle (half) with grilled chicken to make our Chicken and Waffle dish.  It was yummy!  Remember I am allergic to yeast so I am not able to indulge on many things because of this.  Yes, sometimes I still have a bite of something I am not suppose to but with this organic product now I can enjoy making recipes and not have a reaction.

I am starting to enjoy the clean eating thing.  This entire week I ate clean dishes and lost another 2 lbs!!!

Organize Your Home With Style Without Damaging Your Walls

***Disclosure-I received sample product to review.  All opinions stated are my own based on my personal experience.

Do you reorganize at Back to School time?  We do a big cleaning out right before school starts so that we start fresh.  Command has great products to help not only organize but can also be used to decorate with your own style.  No matter what you use the hooks for - like coffee mugs by the coffee pot, oven mitt next to the stove, the water bottle or keys next to the door.  Command products are great and so easy to use.
I like that these are making simple solutions for use all over my house and in every room.

New Hooks for Summer Decorating, Entertaining and Organizing-

-Command Clear Window Hooks w/ UV-resistant adhesive strips – for indoor uses, such as jazzing up sliding glass doors for BBQs, hanging flower wreaths on windows, and more.
-Command Terrace Hooks and Double Hooks – available in three new contemporary colors and designs: Slate, Graphite and Quartz; Double Hooks two-pronged to hold more items
-Command Colorful Hooks – available in four bright transparent colors: pink, purple, blue and green; perfect for children's rooms, decorating with seasonal color trends, party decorating, and more.

New Bath Products for Bathroom Organizing-

Command Shower Caddies, Soap Dish, Multi-Hooks and more – water-resistant strips are proven to hold better than suction cups and are suitable for hot, wet and humid environments; can be used on a variety of surfaces such as glass, mirror, tile, fiberglass and wood.
In my son's bathroom, we always wanted to get him a caddy for all his shower products as you can see from the above pic, there isn't a lot of room for much of anything.  He shares this bathroom with my mother and Lil Bit.  Also you can't hang a caddy from the shower head, see above pic.  I used the New Command Bath- caddy hanger to hang his caddy in his shower.
I also used the New Command Bath products in our bathroom.
Large Towel Hook can hold up to 5 lbs.
Razor Holder can hold up to 3 lbs.
Multi-Hook can hold up to 5 lbs.

I like using Command products because they offer damage-free hanging, and holds strongly in wet conditions.  I have used products with suction cups that fall off.  I went to take a shower and everything had fallen into the tub, but with the Command products the strips really hold.  I can always removed them too and not leave a sticky mess behind.

Simple solutions for my entire house!

ABC's of Summer #SafeConBritaxFamilies

***Disclosure-As a Britax Latina Blogger/Advisory Board Member (and in partnership with Mami Innovative Media), this post is part of a sponsored outreach. All opinions expressed are my own.

We have been having so much fun this summer.  I had forgotten how curious a toddler is and how much they can absorb on a day to day basis.  I work Monday-Friday, 8-5.  The week seems to just swallow time especially with my hour commute to and from work.  So spending time with Lil Bit is so important to my husband and I.  This summer we have enjoyed the outdoors and have used them as learning opportunities for both parents and our toddler.

A is Adjust...My schedule is constant but my husband's insist.  What we have done is adjusted to it.  We work around the busy schedules.  All summer long, my son had tennis practice.  So daddy, MJ, and Lil Bit would meet me at the park on days when I am running late, even if mom is in her work clothes.
While brother is at tennis practice, mom, dad, and Lil Bit play, learn, and discover at the playground.  My daughter is a dare devil and loves the slides-by herself, no help please.  When she gets to sliding there is no stopping her, even on water slides she doesn't get scared at all.
And every now and again, she comes and takes a break by grabbing snacks from her snack tray.
B is for Beyond...See the world in your child's eyes.  Go beyond what you see.  The world is their classroom and you are their teacher.

Bird is a word my daughter can clearly say.  She loves bird.  She calls them to come to her.  "here birdie, birdie"  She loves to feed them.  She loves to bird watch too.
C is for create.  Not every kid is the same.  They don't learn the same or react the same.  So each child should be treated differently.  Create moments of learning or be spontaneous.  Allow them to create as well.  A toddler might be too small to teach them about train, planes and automobiles....or are they?

See they love sounds, and shapes.  Wherever we are, if my daughter here's a sound she stops.  We ask her what does she hear?  If she hears a train, she says choo-choo.  We are working on the word train.  If she says an airplane, she says plane.  She is now starting to say helicopter too.

Everyday we step out, we discover new things, new sounds, and new adventures.  Summer has been a lot of fun.  Cooling off at the sprinkler park has been one of her favorite spots, agua/water-another word she can say.  The walks on the jogging trails have been great for spotting different kinds of animals.  Our learning doesn't have to spot just because summer is coming to an end, new adventures await us.  Remember A is for adjust when the temps get cooler Adjust.
This is where our next adventure is taking us.  The open road.  Asta luego!

Refinancing my Home

When it comes to important matters I am always scared to make change, why fix something if it isn't broken.  One thing topic that would always get me thinking was refinance.  My parents down't own their home, and we do not have any other relatives that I can ask about this here in the states.  So I started to pick the brains of my friends and co-workers.

I was the first to buy a home in our family.  That was scary.  My co-worker who had turn real estate agent actually help me.  I didn't know anything other than where I wanted to live.  See there was a new sub-division being built by my mom's rental home, the day care my son use to go to, and all things familiar to me.  I had told myself, when they start building here, this is where I want my home to be.  One day after church I saw they had broken ground and were starting to build.  I was so happy.  I went in and boom-the house, my house, started to get built.  We drove by the lot and we watched it be built.  I picked every detail that I was allowed.  Being a newbie, I didn't know I could have made better choices or more decision.  I jumped in head first.  I was a first time buyer, and did not have good credit.  NEVER LET YOUR FRIENDS USE YOUR CREDIT/CREDIT CARDS, etc...  Luckily at the time I went in, Bank of America was working with first time buyers.  They did everything in their power to get me into my house.  I had to pay offs some cards, and fix some of my credit in the 3 months that my house was being built.  All the way to the last minute of signing, we moved forward but my loan had yet to be approved.  The house was built, and the day to close came.  The bank was still filing paperwork but everything got approved.  I signed on the dotted lines, pages and pages of paperwork.  I was so excited that I went with it.  I received the keys to my new home and finally became a HOME OWNER!!!  Remember, I was a single parent living on a single parent budget working 3 jobs at times.  I thank my mother for all her help during this transition without her I could not have done it.

Fast forward to this day.  I have been living in my home for over 7 years now.  I am now married.  Interest rates are at an all time low is what the commercial say.  But I have always been scared to mess with anything for my house, make a mistake, and then lose my house because of it.  But more and more people around me were talking about it, so I started asking questions.  Also, my husband is military and USAA has great insurance.  We financed our truck through them because they offered lowest interest rate compared to the bank and credit union.  So we decided to call them for a quote.  I also called around to the banks, credit union and even the current loan holder.  Turns out I could save money, because my interest rate would be cut in half.  My current loan was set for 30 years.  I have always talked about wanting to have my house paid for in 15 years or sooner.  With this economy planning for the future is very important to me.  So we decided that it would be in our best interest to refinance.  We started this process and I learn so much that I felt I had to share the knowledge or my experience at the least.

-Do you know your credit score?

I didn't care because I wasn't making any big purchases.

-Did you know you can get a free credit report, every year, from the 3 credit bureaus?

I didn't know.  I was about to pay when a friend told me about  annualcreditreport.com.  No cc needed.

-Have you checked yours lately?

After getting the 3 reports, I discovered I had extra social security numbers, a husband without a last name that I have never even met, and so much more wrong information.

-How many credit cards do you have? Loans?

I didn't even remember I had co-signed for a car loan.  I had credit cards I didn't even remember I had opened but never closed.  By the way, information does not fall off your credit report after 7 years like I was told before, it is 10 years from the reported closed date/paid date/reported date.  I had a credit card that was paid off and closed when my house was being purchased that should have fell off already, so i thought.  No, the creditor did not report the card paid in full/closed until 2010 which is 4 years after it actually was.  Check your reports.  Close accounts that are not being used.  Pay off as many cards and loans as possible, so they can clear off sooner.  All of these items affect your credit score.

-Interest Rate?

We were offered a very low interest rate but it wasn't low enough to me, I wanted the lowest available.  Did you know you can "buy" or pay to get a lower interest rate?  Find out all your options before making a decision.  See if it is cost effective for you.

-Marriage laws?

I knew this one, but do you know if anything happens and you happen to get a divorce what happens to your assets at the time of dissolution of marriage?  In the state of TEXAS, you split everything 50/50.  I get half, he gets half.

-Loan selling?

In the middle of me trying to refinance my home, I found out that my home loan was sold.  Yes, sold to the highest bidder.  I was so scared but apparently this happens all the time.  Make sure you get all the information and keep records of all payments/transactions, etc...

In summary, this very scary situation had me on pins and needles.  It has been a month of paperwork, phone calls, emails, and head aches but in the end this is the best move for us to make.  Someone explained a home refinance as you purchasing your house from yourself.  You are the seller and you are the buyer.  All the steps that someone would take to sell and buy a home have to be done.  It is all procedures, and paperwork.  Ask questions, a lot of them.  Make sure you understand every step, ask for explanations.  It is not as scary as it seemed.  I am so glad my process is over.

As of today, Mr and Mrs Independentmami are now the proud owners of our old home!

Are you a home owner?  Have you refinanced your home?  I don't know abut you but this whole process made the hairs on my back stand up every time I got a call or email from the future lender.  How easy or hard was your process?

And The Kitchen Sink Cleaner Review

***Disclosure-Sample product was received.  All opinions stated are based on my own personal experience.

Do you use natural cleaning products?  Products that are not harmful to you, your kids or your pets.  A product that is all purpose.  If you look under my kitchen sick, I have a hot mess under there.  Why?  Because I have a product for every item: windows, doors, tables, glass, metal, wood, etc...  I also have tried to make my own concoction and guess what that almost killed me, won't quit my day job to be a chemist for sure.  With my Lil Bit learning how to open cabinets with the child proofs on them, and wanting to tail mommy around I try to look for better products.  Did you read that products?  But why do I need so many products when I can just use one?
I received And The Kitchen Sink Cleaner to try in my home and have been putting them through the test of time, my family, and our messes.  See I want a product do to what it is meant to do.

I have been using the And The Kitchen Sink Cleaner on my sinks, showers, tubs, counter tops, linoleum, tile, laminate, glass, and my carpet.  But it can be used on several places.
I like that this product does not smell like chemicals instead it is aromas like:

-Cedarwood, Rose, Lavender
-Fresh Lemon Mint
-Cucumber Melon
-Elevation Blend
-Juniper, For Needle, Eucalyptis

I like how the house smells after I clean.  I believe the aromas help me clean since they smell so good.  The house smells great and stays clean.  It is not harmful to my daughter who is crawling, walking, licking, and touching everything.  I have room under my kitchen sink for storage now that I don't have several products to use, just one.

I remember growing up watching my poor mom's hands peel from harmful strong products she used and none of them smelling like a spa because that is what the house smells like after I am done cleaning.  A spa.

Now let us talk about cost.

-Free shipping if you are in Portland, Oregon or shipping is calc'd by the # of bottles ordered and if the actual shipping cost varies by more than $1, the difference is refunded.

-You can refill your bottle spray up to 11 times by purchasing the concentrate, saving money and plastic (going green)

-You are now only buying 1 product versus multiple products.

-Natural ingredients: love, water, oils, etc...

-10% donation of sales goes to charity. Enough said.

Any again my house smells like a spa.

Oil Change Check List

***-Disclosure-I received a gift card to facilitate oil change post.  All opinions stated are my own.

Who takes take of your oil changes?  Is it you or your husband?  Many moons ago, I didn't have a husband and was a single mom taking care of everything myself.  Oil changes were included in my duties.  I have always been scared about oil changes and the service I get from places.  I have seen the horrible news stories of people being scammed into thinking that they received an oil change but didn't.  Come on now, how vulnerable does a single mother or a mom look?  I never want to be a victim of this or any discrimination.  I am a consumer, and I am needing a service.  Good service, right?

I told you about MOM last month.  MOM has one main goal: to make sure that consumers receive high-quality oil.  They have a MOM's oil change checklist for you to follow when it is time for your oil change.  You can download it, print it, and take it with you.
My truck is due for an oil change.  I now have a husband and he takes care of this for me, YEAH ME!  But I printed the checklist for us to use this oil change.

Checklist-

1)  Time for a change-So I drive, I drive alot.  I need oil changes faster than 3 months.  I hit my recommend 3000 miles oil change really fast sometimes.  We keep track of this on the mileage gauge on our truck and we take our vehicle to the dealer for an oil change.  They always put a sticker with date and mileage on the glass.  It faces me and I see it everyday.  You would think that would remind me to check the date but sometimes it doesn't and the hubs has to ask, is it time?  Have a hit 3000 miles already?

2)  Right Viscosity-IDK this language you speakittome of.  Please speak English.  (SAE 5W-20 and 5W-30) WHAT?  We get 5W30.
3)  API-Licensed-Again Speak English
4)  Know what you are getting-So #2 and #3 I had never heard of.  Never had anyone tell me and anyone I talk to, has never heard of this either.  But the people that matter are the people doing your oil change.  Do they know what you are asking for?

5)  Full Change-Ok, so this one I knew.  Always get your filter changed.  Don't be cheap....trust me.  You need to switch your filter, all filters once they have done their job need to be replaced.  What do filters do?  Filters crap out, don't make this mistake ever.

6)  MOM licensed installer-You can go to www.motoroilmatters.org and look to see if you have one near you for the next oil change.

7)  Receipt-Now this one I always do.  I always check my receipts, and ask for one if I don't get one.  Just the other day, we were offered a special price and then were still charged full price on an item.  If I would not have checked the receipt, we would have not received our money for the over payment.  Always check your receipts.

8)  Next oil change-How do you keep up with your oil changes?  I told you how mine are done but do you have a system.  Oil changes are important for your vehicles.

By using this checklist I learned about the oil that is going into my vehicle, which I would have never learned about.  My vehicle takes me everywhere.  Just like I take care of myself, I want to take care of my vehicle.  I know everything I put in my mouth, so I should know exactly what goes into my vehicle.

Do you?

***CLOSED***Mi noche de Verano Espectacular

Thanks to #FordLocal, my hubby and I got to enjoy a night out in Houston.  I was not the only lucky person, 6 bloggers were given the chance to plan an awesome #VeranoEspecular night with dinner and a movie included in the evenings schedule.  Some of us surprised our other half by not telling them what was going on, to their surprise a Ford car (for the night) was also included.  My hubs and I had an awesome night that we so needed.  Having a teen and toddler can really put a toll on a person.  I give hands down super parent awards to all those with more than 1 kid, twins (etc), single parents, etc..  I use to could handle just one, and then came my Lil Bit who keeps us on our toes everyday.  But enough about that, this is how our night played out.

We have really had a bad week, my husband and I.  Many challenges.  The sitter was scheduled.  I had told the hubs to get her ready and dropped off.  I was going to drop off teen at church lock in and then head straight home after work.  Little did we know that a storm would be brewing and I looked like a storm chaser, except the storm was chasing me.  I was hoping the storm would turn but it didn't and came straight at us.  As I was at home getting ready, our power went off.  Try fixing your hair and make up in the dark.  Luckily the power came back on and stayed on long enough for me to get all dolled up for my date, which at this point wasn't sure it was going to happen.  My husband even suggest we just stay in, order delivery, and watch movies at home.  I told him that was not happening.  The storm kept pounding outside and I keep trying to get ready while the power kept dimming on and off.  I manage to look some what decent?
Check out my husband's face.  HE is still in shock that we are actually going out on a date with no kids!
I did the rain, rain go away dance as we drove off into the night for our #VeranoEspectacular adventure.

We didn't go out saving the world, or dodging bullets on our #VeranoEspectacular adventure like Cristian de la Fuente and his partner:

But we did fight a storm, power outages, Friday traffic, street flooding, etc.... we left our super parent capes at home in return for a wonderful evening thanks for Ford.

nuNAAT Hair Care Products Review

***Disclosure-Sample product was received to review.  All opinions stated are my own based on my personal experience.

So this year I have already dyed my hair twice, including highlights.  My hair is already over processed from previous color treatments.  I also wash my hair everyday because I workout everyday.  I can't deal with a stinky head, or dirty hair.  My sister in law who works selling hair care products had told me about Keratin.  It is suppose to help restore your hair.

Green Keratin-
An active ingredient derived from soybean, corn and wheat proteins that deeply adheres to hair fibers, promoting incredibly smooth hair through heat action. The result is strong, highly nourished hair that improves flexibility and shine.

Thanks to nuNAAT for sending me the NAAT Brazilian Keratin collection which includes shampoo, conditioner, intense hair mask, liquid keratin leave-in conditioner, and the serum ultra shine.
  • Works with all hair types
  • Repairs cuticle damage
  • Regenerates and strengthens hair fibers
  • Restores natural shine and softness
  • Seals hair cuticles
  • Reduces volume and frizz
  • Makes hair resilient and healthy
  • Formaldehyde and sodium chloride free
This is a photo collage of all the different colors I have had just this year:
From light brown to dark brown and then back to trying to go to my natural color.  Highlights too.  But also flat iron and curling iron damage.  So when my hair has no product in it, it looks a hot mess.  When I do not want to put product in it, I stick it in a bun or ponytail.  Ever since I started using NAAT Brazilian Keratin, others started noticing my hair looked different.  And now I can actually wear it without product.  Just go natural.  My natural curls look good.  I have been using the shampoo and conditioner everyday washing my hair at least once a day, sometimes twice a day.  My hair does not feel as dried out as it use to.
I like the results and will continue using these products to help continue to repair my hair.  My favorite product in this collection is the intense hair mask.  I love how this product smells too!

If you would like to learn more information about this product or more nuNAAT products, go to www.nunnat.com.  You can also check out their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/nunaat), their Twitter page (www.twitter.com/nunaat), and their YouTube page (www.youtube.com/nunaatbeauty).

THE FIFTH ESTATE opens wide in theaters on October 18th!

Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. Now, in a dramatic thriller based on real events, “The Fifth Estate” reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organization. The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes. Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world’s most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society—and what are the costs of exposing them?"

Giveaway-Aveeno Baby End of Summer Prize Pack

Disclosure-No compensation was received.  Sponsor is providing prize pack for winner.  Any opinions stated are my own.

Twice this summer I had someone tell me about having a rash on their skin and wondering why?  My first question was - Was there any sun exposure?  My second was - Was there sun protection?  Babies and Toddlers need protection from the sun all the time even if you think the sun is not strong or hiding in the clouds.  Cloudy days can be very dangerous.  The UV rays are still there.  As the Summer comes to and end and the trips are almost over, don't forget to always protect yourself and babies from the sun.

Aveeno is a great brand because of it natural ingredients.  They won't irritate the skin, great for those with sensitive skin.  This is what the doctor's always have recommended to me.  Aveeno has sun care products:

AVEENO®  BABY CONTINUOUS PROTECTION® LOTION SUNSCREEN WITH BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 55
·         Formulated with ACTIVE NATURALS®  Colloidal Oatmeal to soothe baby's delicate skin and help prevent moisture loss
·         ENVIROGUARD™ Technology maintains broad spectrum protection
·         Hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, non-greasy and water resistant (80 minutes)
·         Developed specifically for baby’s delicate skin
·         AVEENO® is the #1 dermatologist recommended brand for baby sunscreen

As well as:

AVEENO®  BABY SOOTHING RELIEF CREAMY WASH
·         Formulated with ACTIVE NATURALS® Colloidal Oatmeal glycerin, a natural plant derived humectant that helps lock in moisture, and rich emollients blended into a creamy wash that gently cleanses and soothes baby’s delicate skin
·         The hydrating, rich creamy wash leaves skin feeling moisturized for 24 hours

Giveaway-NEUTROGENA® Back To School Must-Haves Review

***Disclosure-Sample product was received to review.  All opinions stated are my own based on my personal experience.

Have your kids gone back to school?  Mine goes back next Monday.  Starting high school.  I remember first day of freshman year.  I was so scared.  I think I washed my face several times.  I wanted to look like a high schooler and even though I didn't wear make up that day I wanted to look fresh.  So I went with a natural look, soft but natural.  I still remember the butterflies in my stomach walking on campus that day.

Neutrogena has put together a back to school must have list.

-NEUTROGENA® Oil-Free Acne Wash
-NEUTROGENA® Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15
-NEUTROGENA® SkinClearing® Liquid Makeup
-NEUTROGENA® SkinClearing® Mineral Powder
-NEUTROGENA® SkinClearing® Blemish Concealer

Neutrogena makes great product that are not harsh on my face.  My husband and son both have tried it and agree.  This combo is perfect to get your started and looking great ready for anything for students, teachers, and volunteers headed back to school.
By the way, I have this huge pimple on my chin that you can't even see because I used the blemish concealer.  Like I said fresh, soft, and natural.
